Hi guys/gals,

I've taken on a bit of research with my freight forwarder here at work (Penguin Shipping) to quote for the 2 variations of the 40ft containers and the 20ft one, he will let me know and then i'll forward the details (based upon loading in Southampton in October at Weston SC - 3 free hours load time then £40 every hour after). He will try and extend the quotation beyond standard terms of 30days to 90days but at least it will be a good judge on costings. Penguin Shipping have been used by the Contenders and Wayfarers in the past and they are our preferred shipper of our goods from the USA and NZ so I have a good relationship with them.

Hamburg Sud don't ship from Southampton so if we wanted to specifically utilise them off the back of the Australian travelling we'd have to pay for internal freight to Tilbury...but it's being investigated.

Costs will be door to door but can't comment on Customs Clearing at present as this may change and billable to the UK fleet

Just to add to that. When we laoded for Sydney, we did it at Tilbury docks and there was not a problem. However, we now have port state control (security) systems in place, but feel sure there will be a way round that.

Last time I went to an Aus Worlds (Sydney 06 -a great trip :D ) the overall return shipping cost per boat was £750 after £1,400 worth of sponsorship a member of the team was able secure from their employer (Lloyds Register).

As Barnsie said we loaded at TIlbury - after flashing the appropriate id we managed to get into the port and load up ok.

That time we took 13 boats in a 20ft and a 40ft container. We all paid the costs in 3 installments.

Obviously a lot has changed in the world since then but will be interesting to see how the potential costings stack up this time. Cheers for the looking at some of the options so far Mark C.

Would be great to get 2 containers worth of boats over to McCrae.

Hi Guys,

These are a rough indication (return costs being looked at):
1) 20ft container – loading at Weston, Southampton – arrival Melbourne Port = GBP1250.00
2) 40ft / 40ft HC container – loading at Weston, Southampton – arrival Melbourne Port = GBP1600.00

No destination charges included.
Weekly sailings via Singapore – transit time approx 47 days
VAT: ZERO RATED
Insurance available if required at 0.4% of the value declared which must be equivalent to CIF+10%

My agent is suggesting we use an ATA Carnet which is an expensive and restrictive procedure, whereby the Boats and equipment are identified in the UK, listed on the Carnet which eases the way through the Customs inward and outward. It does mean that nothing can remain in Australia or there will be duty and GST payable in Australia and/or forfeiture of the deposit to the London of Chamber of Commerce, who issue the Carnet.

Anyways, just an idea for those budgeting (not to be confused with budgie smuggling hey Leaky)

Hi Alan et al.

Obviously you need to double the initial cost and add a couple of hundred or so more for costs - the carnet being suggested is to load the cost in advance to speed customs clearing in Oz but does mean that no unsightly charges may occur. Sea Freight currently around the world is cheap, obviously this may be lowered further through sponsorship and costs may still crash due to sealines trying to fill ships.

I'll keep you updated...oh my forwarder has even suggested Air Freighting boats which is loosely £800 each boat each way if people last minute wanted to think about. Just a thought

... there's a photo somewhere of Shirely Roberston checking her Europe in as oversized baggage on the way to the Atlanta Olympics. Reckon a B14 might be a little TOO oversized for that

Air freight is a serious option, but bear in mind the container the boat will need to have to protect it and it is going into AUS, so not wood. Mast will need to be 2 part to fit in. I looked at taking one this way to Hobart but it was prohibitive at the time due to the location. Melbourne would not be so. So you could sail you boat on the Sunday at Rutland and the following Sunday in McCrae 8) and only be say £600 more than the container plus packaging.
I can think of a couple of people who are now doing the maths

***STOP PRESS ***

Shipping Partner confirmed for the championship

The full details will take time with regards to land side transit etc but Teams should be budgeting circa £500 for shipping costs assuming we fill containers.

We will work to tie down this number and advise on timelines to register official interest and pay deposits etc ASAP.
