The increase seems to correlate with the recent fix to registration.
Deleting the spam as it appears would be a major effort. Maybe going the other way round would require less effort: add a hand full of "moderaters" for the sole purpose of approving posts? If volunteers for that are needed, count me in.
Until then, I would take some bacon and eggs to go with the spam.

Further update to ensure we have all spam possibilities covered - noticed that we were only getting spam in some of the sub-forums, revised security on those to match the spam-free (hopefully) ones...
