Screws broken of our fixation of shroud

Postby Le_marquis » Wed Jun 29, 2011 10:32 am

Following the breakdown of this weekend in one of our fixation of shroud, I've changed all the fixation.

Looking at the state of one who has not broken but that was about to do, so I found why it was broken.

Conditions: irregular wind with a maximum instantaneous wind has registered 34 knots, flat seas.

The fixation deforms in response to sudden major efforts, causing a deformation of the screw heads (although the 6 mm).

The second photo shows the direction of deformation (the screws are placed as they were on the boat). it works in the axis, vertically.

the screws break flush with the head (see at the red line on the picture).

I suggest you replace them with screws that are threaded to the head as I did, even if you are in good condition.

Very interesting, but I can't work out where it is located on the boat. Could you post a location photo please.

Understood. The U bold is a better solution.

Hi Folks

The only problem with U bolts is that if the loop distorts, potentially you may shift the bolt thread and so open up the hull to leaks. Though not the strongest solution, if the right bolts are used, you'll maintain watertight integrety when the eye strap distorts. The key is to use ones that do not have the thread to the top. We now carry them in stock, and when Alan posts the updated list on the website, you'll have a much more extensive list available to you.

Bye for now

The real problem is that the strap has been squeezed to fit the hole spacing on the boat (tail wagging the dog) so the bolt heads don't sit square on the strap, only the inside edges of the heads are taking any load. It's one of the most epically ghastly bits of engineering I've ever seen on a boat (and I've seen a few). And one of the most crucial areas on the boat as well...

Most U-bolts come with a plate which will prevent them from distorting, or at least prevent the legs/threads going through the hull from shifting if the eye distorts. The main problem is the hole spacing - fitting a U-bolt means drilling another hole for one of its legs, the question is is this OK to do? I'd prefer to fit a U-bolt and a bit of bar underneath the gunwhale for the bolts to pull up on (as on the Rondars).

Hopefully this is an area which will be sorted out on the new boats.

Or drill the holes to suit the eyestrap, not the other way around...
